It depends totally upon your goal, what kind of a teacher you get, how much you practice, and what you consider to mean having "learnt drums". You can start playing song within 3 months, you can start listening to and covering songs yourself withing a year or two, and you can start making your own beats... read more

It depends totally upon your goal, what kind of a teacher you get, how much you practice, and what you consider to mean having "learnt drums". You can start playing song within 3 months, you can start listening to and covering songs yourself withing a year or two, and you can start making your own beats and fills in an year or two as well. But to become a drummer who can make their own grooves and fills, play a 2 hour set on stage with a band, record drum covers, play drum solos etc, takes years and years of learning and practice.

Painkiller by Judas Priest starts with a Drum solo, and I feel that's one of the best solos in a song, at least rock or metal.

Most of the instruments look easy to play if you have never picked up the instrument. Drums look easy to some because of the ease with which great drummers play their instruments. Once these people sit down on the kit and try to lay down a beat is when they realise its not that easy.

Practice pads are a good place to start but eventually as you progress you need to invest in drumkit. You cannot learn an instrument without having one.
