Dholak technique involves mostly right-hand finger strokes on or near the rim of the higher-pitched head, and left-hand taps and slaps near the resonant center of the lower-pitched head.

There are two types of stroke sound;
A closed (band) stroke making a flat, non-resonant sound.
An open (khula) stroke making a resonant, ringing sound.

Strokes are played in three ways;
Right-handed
Left-handed
Two-handed
