Not sure why he is interested in IT post-M.Sc. Anyways, if he wants to move into IT, I would recommend him to explore in Data Science/Analytics instead of hardcore IT.
Few suggestions for Data related profiles (Data Science, Analytics and Business Analytics) -
Believe he is master (above good to have) in Mathematics -
He should start learning some basic of Languages for example - as you mentioned Python, R, SAS, SQL (advanced level), few data visualization tools and polish his maths skill and last but not least Excel (Microsoft ) and presentation skills
Post that he can easily apply for Analytics related profiles.
This will also help him to move into machine learning (ML/AI) technologies.
Still, he wants to move into IT (not happy to move into analytics) - he should learn UNIX/Linux and then AWS and scripting languages, for example, Python, cmd, PowerShell and some other tools such as docker, VM, deployment technologies etc.
