While multi-threading in Java, when do you use "synchronized statements" instead of "synchronized methods"?

When the whole functions need not be locked for multiple threads, but only few statements need to be locked for multi threaded environment

If a function is not handling the exception throws clause can be added to the function signature. This includes the list of exceptions which can be thrown by the function
