Salsa is a combination of many dances and musical styles that originated in Cuba and New York City:

Cuba

The dance's roots are in Afro-Cuban, Spanish, and Caribbean dances like the rumba and Cuban Son. Bandleader Arsenio Rodríguez pioneered Afro-Cuban music, which spread to Latin America and New York City.

New York City

The orchestra led by Cuban émigré Machito blended Afro-Cuban styles with jazz and big band approaches. The term "salsa" was coined by Johnny Pacheco in the 1960s to describe the Cuban dance music being played in New York City at the time. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Cubans created salsa as a dance, combining mambo with Latin dances like the Son and Rumba, as well as American dances like swing, hustle, and tap.
