A covalent bond is a type of chemical bond between atoms in which atoms share pairs of electrons in their outer shell, unlike an ionic bond in which transferring of electrons occurs.
And since Carbon has 4 electrons in its outer shell (carbon electron configuration = 2,4). Therefore, it can share it all and form covalent bonds with other atoms and itself since it has a maximum number of the electron in its outer shell available for sharing. Unlike silicon, it has a small size.
