COBOL and FORTRAN, once pioneering languages, declined primarily due to technological advancements and shifts in programming paradigms. As computing evolved, newer languages emerged, offering more efficient syntax, enhanced features, and better compatibility with modern systems. COBOL, designed for business applications, struggled to adapt to the changing landscape of software development, particularly in the era of web and mobile computing. FORTRAN, while still used in niche scientific and engineering applications, faced competition from more versatile languages like C, C++, and later, Python and Java, which offered greater flexibility and ease of use. Additionally, the aging workforce familiar with COBOL and FORTRAN diminished, leading to a shortage of skilled developers to maintain and advance these languages. Consequently, organizations gradually migrated to more contemporary languages, relegating COBOL and FORTRAN to legacy status.
