To keep the body working properly, it must be supplied with right amount of chemicals in food. The chemical substances present in food are called Nutrients.

- It provides energy for various activities of the body.
- It helps the body to grow and replace worn out cells.
- It protects the body from various diseases and keeps it fit and healthy.
Ingredients of Food
Any food prepared has several ingredients. We get them mainly from plants and animals. Water and salt are two ingredients obtained from earth.
Sources of Food
Green plants prepare their own food from carbon dioxide, water, sunlight and chlorophyll. Green Plants are known as Producers. They prepare more food than they need. The extra food is stored in different parts of plant.
We get food from animals as well: Milk from cow, buffalo, goat, camel; Eggs from hen, duck, quail; Meat from hen, duck, goat, fish; Honey from honeybee(they collect nectar from flowers and take it to their hive where they convert it into honey and store as food).
