Adjectives
Adjectives give us information about nouns.
an adjective occurs before a join. An adjective can occur in the predicate without being followed by a noun.An adjective tells us more about a noun.
E.g. 1) The flower is beautiful.
Here, the word 'beautiful' is describing the flower. It asks a question 'how?'
Apart from this, there are 4 main types of adjectives:
1) Adjectives of quality
2) Adjectives of quantity
3) Adjectives of number
4) Demonstrative adjectives
1) Adjectives of quality:
Adjectives of quality are also called as descriptive adjectives. They tell us about kind of person, place, animal or thing. They tell us about the shape, size or colour of a particular noun. They answer the question 'what kind?'
E.g. 1) Through the round window there is an old house.
2) The film was really very funny.
3) It's sunny today. I'm going to have a juice now.
2) Adjectives of quantity:
Adjectives of quantity will ask the question 'how much?' The words like some, any, enough, all, or some units of measurement can be used in adjectives of quantity.
E.g. 1) I think you have enough ice cream!
2) There is already 2 kg sugar in the box.
3) I ate a pizza and some salad.
3) Adjectives of number:
Adjectives of number are also called as adjectives of quantity. But they are used when you want to give a fixed and precise answer. They answer a question 'how many?'
E.g. 1) My father has five brothers.
2) There are eleven players in hockey team.
3) There are 3 boys in my class.
4) Demonstrative adjectives:
Demonstrative adjectives are used to point out or draw our attention to something. These adjectives start with the letter 't' such as those, these, this, that.
E.g. 1) Those shoes are too small.
2) Is that our bus?
3) Sit in the shadow of this tree.
