I think I am the right person to answer this question because I, too, had to struggle with this problem in the past and have flipped it around into a career. Now I am officially teaching communication skills. (ta-da!).
So how this happened(I will try to keep it short)- I was very good at English. Yet, I struggled with communicating effectively. Thus busting the myth that knowing good English is necessary for communication, I watched videos, attended lectures, but what worked for me was when I met my fear head-on, the only way to learn better communication is to start communicating. I sure made mistakes in the starting period, but those only made me better. So go and talk to random strangers, just say whatever comes to your mind, compliment the person standing next to you in the grocery store aisle, make orders at a restaurant, greet people, do. TAKE ACTION, STOP PREPARING.

Five things to understand:

  1. Communication skills are not about how good you are at your language. It's beyond that, and you can learn it with some secret sauce.
  2. That sauce is practice; you should practise the techniques you are trained on regularly.
  3. Body language, Eye contact, volume, voice modulation are techniques you should work on to become a super communicator.
  4. Get a mentor to understand and help you be coached; otherwise, it would take ages to achieve this result.
  5. Ask yourself why do you want to become an effective communicator. Until there is a goal set, you won't want to become one, rather understand its tips and techniques and forget about it.

All the best, pal!

Everyone, in some respect, is a teacher; some just work harder to do it better - Since 2005

Communication skills is a gradual process, do not expect overnight results. It comes by practice. Since it's a gradual process, instead of learning new words, try to speak sentences using the words learnt. Listen to others and ask questions, then develop the habit of reading. Try to think in English.

Any skill, be it riding a bicycle, driving a car or speaking a language, is learnt by following a simple and step by step technique which involves the following steps - 1st Observe, 2nd understand 3rd do, 4th make mistakes, 5th correct the mistakes 6th repeat the process of doing the act. Now, apply the same principle to learning communication skills. First, observe people with good communication skills, what kind of language they use, what they do to continuously improve their skills, understand their style and knowledge, and slowly start practising those skills by implementing them on a real-time basis. Make mistakes, seek a learned mentor who can rectify them, correct them, redo the exercise and with the repetition of this cycle, you will not just improve in the communication but also excel in it.

Communication skills are such a term which itself define it- A skill that comes from practice. So to improve communication skills, the only productive step is to communicate as much as possible. You may follow specific steps:

  1. Face the mirror and speak, act and talk to yourself.
  2. Watch English/Hindi(preferable language) series and try to imitate them.
  3. Irfan Khan mentioned he never took English classes, but he called on customer care service and opted to talk with an English executive. The executive doesn't know you, so why don't you give it a shot.
  4. Learn one or two sentences or more in a day and try to use that particular sentence as many times as possible in a day.
  5. Choose a random topic and speak on it and record it to listen and work on yourself.
  6. Reading improves fluency and also improves speaking skills.
  7. Decide a topic and discuss it for 10-20 minutes with your siblings/friends/family/.

You will find a thousand ways to solve your problem, but the only solution holder is you. Believe that you can do it, and you will do it. It will not come in a day or two but every day's practice which helps you eliminate shyness and nervousness. It just gets you comfortable with the procedure that it takes nothing to express your thoughts or to communicate. All you just have to do is believe yourself and speak; whatever the language you choose, you are bright.

I hope this helps.

Thanks!

Practice, practice, and more practice. You start talking about things that excite you to your friends, plus making a video of your monologue is also a thing that is very underrated yet very effective. Start, and you will see your communication skills enhancing within few days. That is the best way.
