As per my understanding, Quantum mechanics is the current theory of how an atom or a particle looks like and behave. Quantum mechanical model of an atom describes the position of electrons in an atom better than any other model proposed earlier.

Definition of Modern Quantum Mechanics

Modern quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that describes the physical properties and behaviors of matter and energy at the atomic and subatomic levels. It provides a mathematical framework for understanding phenomena such as wave-particle duality, quantum entanglement, and superposition, which are essential in explaining the interactions between particles that classical mechanics cannot adequately address.

Key Concepts in Modern Quantum Mechanics

Key concepts include wave functions, which represent the probabilities of a particle's properties; the uncertainty principle, which states that certain pairs of properties cannot be simultaneously measured with arbitrary precision; and quantization, where certain physical properties can only take on discrete values. These concepts revolutionized the understanding of atomic and molecular processes and formed the basis for applications in various fields, such as quantum chemistry, condensed matter physics, and quantum computing.

Historical Context

The development of modern quantum mechanics emerged in the early 20th century, with significant contributions from physicists like Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, and Erwin Schrödinger. These scientists introduced ideas that challenged classical physics and laid the groundwork for a new understanding of the microscopic world, fundamentally altering the landscape of theoretical physics.

Applications of Modern Quantum Mechanics

Modern quantum mechanics has led to numerous technological advancements and applications, including the development of lasers, semiconductors, and MRI machines. It continues to be a driving force behind research into quantum computing, which has the potential to revolutionize information processing and cryptography.

Quantum mechanics is the branch of physics that studies the processes of real matter and energy at ever decreasing scales, namely atoms and subatomic particles. It gives the equations and mathematical tools necessary for the computation of certain physical properties, interactions and behaviors of such minute entities.

Some of the important features of modern quantum mechanics are:

Wave-Particle Duality: Different experimental configurations make particles such as electrons to be acted upon as waves or as particles.

Quantization: Continuous values of physical quantities (for instance energy), in reality exists in limited levels or quanta. This was first done by Max Planck in his black-body radiation work and was refined in the atom model of Niels Bohr.

Superposition: Particles remain in a state of contradictory properties of several states and are not defined until they are measured. This is the example of the famous Thought experiment known as the Schrödinger’s cat that demonstrates quantum indeterminacy.

Uncertainty Principle: Concept initiated by Werner Heisenberg, wherein every measurement of a certain physical quantity when carried out in exactly the same manner leads to constant level of inaccuracy. Some examples include two physical parameters position and momentum, that are being considered simultaneously.

Entanglement: It is possible, that two or more particles would become inter entangled in such a way, that the state of the one individual matter, and stasis is affected by the other, and vice versa, without regard to distance between the two samples.

Why is only the speed of light constant in all frames of reference?

The only thing that affects the speed of light is the refractive index of the medium through which it moves, and for space, this number is 1.000000 and gives you the maximum possible speed of light.

Sameer went on his bike from Delhi to Gurgaon at a speed of 60km/hr and came back at a speed of 40km/hr. What is his average speed for entire journey?
To find the average speed, you need to know the formula of average speed. The avg speed 0= 2 d / (t1+ t2) = 2 v1.v2/(V1 + V2). Just substitute the value.
