It is to be understood that Chinese is a pictorial language, and it is also known that Chinese does not have alphabets like the west. The words of Chinese is made up of individual characters. The largest Chinese dictionary is known state that more than 23000 Chinese characters exist and initially, it has 56678 Characters throughout the Chinese history, but most of them are now considered to dead.

Another fascinating thing about the facts of the Chinese language is, these characters can be combined into more 300000 unique words in Chinese. There are roughly around 106000 Chinese words. But having said that, as a beginner in Chinese, one can start by learning 1000 characters as only 900 of the total number of characters are printed on the newspapers of china. To be thorough, learning around 3000 characters can be enough for the daily use of Chinese if you are planning to live or migrate to china

 Hope this helps

Chinese does not have an phonetic alphabet like all Western languages. Instead, it has picture-based characters, each having a single-syllable pronunciation. Each character is used alone as a word or combined with other characters to form compound words.
