There are no set parameters for a successful result, we all have different skillset and understanding level, success can vary a lot on personal understanding and effort, but a few things that can be taken into account are:
1: Learn to spot the best answer choice from a possible answer choice.
2: Understand the Question Type
3: Learn the nature of wrong choices and avoid them
4: Spot the marker in question, marker means the most important words
5: Understand a passage through before you start/attempt to answer, spend time understanding a passage; this is crucial.
Read as much as possible. Reading is very vital in improving your score, try and read as much as you can.

It is possible to achieve good marks in GRE and IELTS, without any formal training, but that does not mean you don’t need any training at all. English speaking skills can be acquired naturally from your personal and professional circle, but you need to get some expert to advise on the reading, writing and listening skills. These need not be from a trainer, as I said earlier, you can also buy books from the market and do it. But please ensure that you have someone good enough to give you feedback on your progress.
