As i m a career counsellor, i have seen most of the students and parents are so confused to choose their field and guided wrong by ungenuine people . For choosing a course students aptitude and interests are important factors . 

As individuals each of us are unique. Research shows that we develop our talents (Talent: Natural way of thinking, acting and behaving) based on our life experiences and learning in childhood, parenting, friends, teachers, attitude we have developed along with what we are born with. All this happens by age of 15 years. These talents do not change much for rest of the life. So it is important to become self aware of the talents we have, as these talents can become our strengths if knowingly practiced. Hence one can really do well if they choose the academics that is aligned to their strengths. Same is true with careers as well. For example in academics if someone is interested in appreciating beauty and not in favor of working numbers, they may do very well in arts where as they may fail to become a a great mathematician. Similarly if someone is very much outgoing they may do extremely well in a sales/marketing job. If one is sort meeting new people is not their liking they may fail in a sales/marketing job where the job demands everyday meeting someone new. So for any journey we need to have a destination defined so that we can plan the journey well. Similary for academics or for career it is important to have a defined plan that is designed based on individual talent, strengths, attitude, passion as well as go-forward market scenario.  Career counseling helps in identifying the destination and the options that may have to reach it.

Generally we do not know all options available for education. Nor we know the specific liking. Career counsellor first of all check the clients psychology, his interests. It is said that one perform 3 times better in his enjoyable career. Based on traits enjoyable career can be arrived.
