You need to learn data mining and machine learning along with having a basic grasp of statistics and maths, in order to be a successful data scientist. Many courses in BTech/MCA/MTech are now including these topics.
If you want to study independently, then I will suggest going through internet based courses. Andrew Ng has a basic course on machine learning available in coursera. SentDex on YouTube has a Python based machine learning course. You can study these courses to gain some decent ideas in this field.
