Hi Gowthami. True Passion and Toil is the key..but at 23 one needs the guidance/coaching of an experienced mentor, since you practically do not have the leasure of spending 10 years only for preparation... you need to deliver/perform in the next 3 or 4 years. Learning Indian classical (espcially Hindustani) gives a clear understanding of notes, rhythm and tempo and strenghten ones foundation for commerical singling. It mporves your breathing technique, throw, phrasing, enables you to add all the embelishments you need to add to beautify your songs. But, if your teacher understands versatility and the techniques of commerical singing (bollywood and light music) it is an added advantage.. since a very deep and through curriculum in classical vocal doesn't give you an edge in singing light music. Please get in touch if my suggestions make sense to you.

I would suggest to seek the guidance of a teacher who would help you with one-to-one classes but after a span of around 5 to 6 months it is good to get training in small group of 3 to 5 students of similar ability level and temperament; through my experiences I have noticed that this method works really well to augment one's improvement index.

Dear Ashish, trying and failing at 24 is not a good idea.. since you already have a solid plan to do playback. I would suggest you to train yourself with basic elements of Hindustani classical along with a lot of semi-classical stuff and other sub-genres of indian music and also folk music (if you find a versatile Guru). There 3 most essential genres to succeed in Indian playback career (no matter what language you prefer to sing in, hindi, kannada, marathi or bengali). You need to be consistent in learning, i.e., don't waste time in venturing out in forming a band, do stage shows or participate in too many competitons.. since all of these are major distractions and would eventually slow down your learning process leading you nowhere. Learning for 4 years at one stretch is a 'must' for any singer looking forward to have a successful career.
