Drawing is a skill some are gifted with while others work hard to perfect. In both cases the development of their skill levels happen based on the time dedicated to practice the art. Many gifted children develop the skills needed to draw well by trial and error method. But in most cases they give up trying to build further on their inherent abilities as they dont find the right guidance at the right time. A great talent is thus killed even before it really started. Some gifted ones go on and keep working at it and they realise their potential. But the trial and error method costs them dear. There are others who are lucky and get the right guidance at the right time and these are the ones who go on and make a difference to their potential. Drawing is not just limited to creating beautiful pictures. It is the ability of the mind to think beyond the ordinary. The concept of translating whats in the mind to paper needs clarity of conception and execution. More often than not its a stupendous task that many fail to complete. Developing the ability to draw well is like developing another dimension in the mind which equips the learner to think broader, deeper and more vividly. I have noticed that most gifted children who draw well are generally more alert, more vibrant and more efficient in whatever they do. I attribute this ability to the direct effect of having developed that part of the mind which goes beyond general studies that all children go through.

Painting is the next step in the development process of the mind after drawing. Painting adds color which in turn opens up the mind, multi- fold as visual dynamics now takes another dimension. Color brings depth that drawing is limited by. All learners progress to painting naturally after getting the confidence to draw well. But it also pushes the boundary of the art. Painting well needs more efforts to master compared to drawing. While both are interdependent the overall reaction that a beautiful painting evokes is quiet simply mind boggling. Teaching painting takes longer and more efforts to bring the desired results and so it is for the learner. It is here that more talented people are prone to give up than drawing. But those who stick on live to enjoy the unexplainable accomplishment of creating something that in turn gives joy to so many who view the creation. That is a feeling few lucky people understand. Its an achievement that transcends almost all considerations. To be able to master something like that is no easy task and I strive to enlighten every learner about this profound achievement even while sympathising with those who give up the opportunity midway. The number of people who continue to pursue the art is much smaller than those who dont but my joy lies in the fact that all of them have learnt something that regular school or college has not taught.

Drawing and sketching go hand in hand. In that one must have the ability and confidence to draw well to be able to sketch well. Sketching needs maturity in the trade to depict the intended without the advantages of colors and tones. It is an ability in itself where ones grasp of a subject gets translated to visual depiction. It needs training and long hours of practice that has no short cuts. Original ideas and a hand to depict the same. A combination very difficult to come by. It is a challenge to teach these aspects as no immediate result is forth coming. No yard stick either to measure by. Apart from the basics of drawing the subject has to rely mostly upon his intuitive creativity which is not taught. It is learnt and that is the challenge.
