Start with developing your listening skills. Listening to native speakers would be better, though you may not understand them fully in the beginning. Use television and the internet, news and narrative channels like National Geographic, Discovery, etc. Also start reading good but easy to understand magazines, like suggested above by another user, The Readers Digest is a very good on. Read complete phrases and sentences, try to understand them and then try to speak what you read, out loudly, without looking in the book. You can confirm the accuracy of what you memorised by recording yourself. Keep doing this and immerse yourself in English programs, talk shows and movies. You- tube also has a lot that will help with improving your language. Watch TED videos to listen to some good speakers.

Well how old English is, hardly has any relevance to learning to speak it well. I'm sure Google can give you the whole history but remember, languages evolve over a period of time and what English was a couple of hundred of years ago, would have hardly been anything like what it sounds now.

The average individual only has a vocabulary of about 1500 words and that is more than enough to speak effectively. You don't need to use hard-to-crack or sophisticated words in order to sound good . It will, in most cases, just make you sound like a nerd and the listener would miss the point. So, to... ...more

So, to answer your question, I would say, not grammar or the rules of grammar but your grammatical correctness would be more important and believe it or not, that can be achieved WITHOUT studying grammar :)

Look at a group of words that make almost complete sense, understand the meaning, memorize it and then read it out loud without looking at it .You may glance back at it to make sure you're reading it right. This should help but would be much more effective if you can spend 3 to 6 months on it .
