Popup handling could be either an alert, another window, tab, confirm alert or prompt box. It is important to handles popups otherwise otherwise it lead to exceptions. If a link opens in a new window or tab and you need to navigate between them, you want to switch to new window, perform some operations and then navigate back to main window If you get a alert box , you require to click on OK button, before you can proceed with other steps If you are prompted with a confirm box, you may either click on OK or Cancel which can direct the page according to button being clicked on - like OK will accept the action and redirect the page or so and Cancel will not perform any action and close the confirm box If you are prompted with a prompt box, then you are expected key in some value as input

The alternatives for QTP depends on couple of factors 1. It depends on what type of application are you automating - web or desktop based applications 2. It depends on which technology your application is built of that you plan to automation - is it developed in Java, Dot Net, Delphi, Oracle, People Soft etc - QTP has a Add in for each of them 3. It also depends what test cases you plan to automate and are they identifiable by QTP Add Ins or require third party help / or is it not feasible to automate some of the objects at all 4. Licensed Tool so comes with Cost - most of the companies are using it but now since, most of the applications are web-based, and there is constrained on budget, it is good for open source tools like Selenium but then requires to have knowledge of a programming language - Java, C#, Perl, Python. PHP, Ruby - any one of them 5. QTP has User Manual . Selenium though may not have much official help but there are many websites with immense information which if referred, Selenium is not difficult to learn but definitely requires lots of practice. 6. There are many more licensed tools in the market SilkTest, TestComplete, Rational Functional Tester too which you may have a look at.

Object Repository is a placeholder to storing objects that help in identification of objects. Objects are categorized based on classes and identified by their properties. Without learning, capturing and storing Objects with their properties in the Object Repository, you cannot perform operations on them which is a must for success of automating a test case. Object Repositories are identified by Mandatory and Assistive Properties. Also, there are 2 types of Object Repositories - Local Object Repository and Shared Object Repository. Local Object Repository helps you to store objects per action meaning Only the objects that are used for coding in the action can be part of the local object repository attached to it. This leads to redundancy when you need to use the same objects in different actions and makes it difficult to maintain incase, there are properties changes to objects and thus Shared Object repository comes to help where in you can keep all the objects used in the actions together in one location and thus making maintanence task very easy.
