Overview

Although never professionally, but I HAVE some good experience in teaching... I really feel I have a lot to offer to students who want to not only score good marks in exams but who in general want to improve their English-writing, English-speaking and communication skills. I have previously helped out students in their English Literature and grammar exams, I have given English-speaking and phonetics lessons to my friends who were a bit weak in that section. My scores in English (for instance, the 83 percent marks in English in the class Xth ICSE board exams or the 97 percentile in the English section of XAT 2013) stand me in good stead and that is the reason probably that many of my friends or juniors have approached me from time to time with their doubts. Add to that the fact that I am an avid reader and an active writer. I believe in very friendly, interactive sessions while teaching because that keeps the spirits up and learning happens best when the spirits are good.
In this age off globalization, I feel one has to be relatively well-versed in English and it is also true that this is one language that helps us get acquainted with a lot of other works in different languages. Most of the good translations of great Russian or French classics are the English translations, and not for no reason. One cannot deny that English reaches out to more people globally.
Going ahead in life, apart from one's mother tongue and the national language (which I must add are equally important), this age demands good command over English. And I would be extremely satisfied if I am able to share the knowledge and skills I have acquired over the years.

Make English-speaking friends with whom you can have conversations on a regular basis, and ask them to correct you wherever you go wrong. But never be embarrassed by mistakes. Learn from them and try not to repeat the same mistakes. These are the basic things- and never neglect grammar- but in case you already know all this and are looking for something more, get the book by Norman Lewis- 'Word power made easy'...Now that's a good book!

I'd say it depends on what you want. If you only want to write better and improve your vocab and grammar, a one-on-one tutorial would do along with referring good books like Wren & Martin (for grammar) and 'Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis (for vocab and fine-tuning in general). However, an MA in... ...more

However, an MA in English involves literature as well and would give you a sound overall knowledge of the different works in English. It will make you more KNOWLEDGEABLE in English, and not just a good writer or speaker. So yes, it is important to first know what you want in the long run.

Follow grammar from 'Wren and Martin', vocab and word usage from 'Word Power Made Easy- by Norman Lewis'. And try to read newspapers like 'The Hindu' daily.. Refer the dictionary and keep it constantly beside you.

There are a lot of basic things you have to develop a habit of, such as reading (and you have to like it, so better go for articles/stories that interest you) and following good English speakers (good examples being news readers like Rajdeep Sardesai or Arnab Goswami) on TV. Inculcate a habit of speaking in English, texting in English. Also important to remember is never to be a lazy or casual learner. If you have a doubt regarding the correctness of a sentence or a word, make sure you at least jot it down somewhere so that you can clarify the doubt. One learns more from mistakes, mind you. Never compromise on grammar, spellings. Vocabulary comes only after that. And finally, do buy this great book that will be of your help eternally. I'm talking about 'Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis. Hope this helped.
