Hi Laxman,
API stands for Application Programming Interface which is a means of exposing the business logic for easy consumption by service users. These users can be the UI layer itself or any other company. For example if you check websites like trivago.com who shows hotel pricess from different hotels around the world. If you think how they collect all that information and display to users is using APIs and hitting the endpoints of those hotels and then fetch the required information. Postman is a great tool, a GUI alternative to command line tools like curl or more powerful full blown frameworks like Restassured and Karate. Here’s the things you need to do.
1. Understand the business logic end to end.
2. Collect all end points (Get, Post, Put, Delete etc.,) and document their inputs and respective outputs.
3. See what type of authentication mechanism is used.
4. Start slowly by picking a couple of end points for each HTTP verb. Like a couple of Get calls, a couple of Post etc.,
5. Create a collection for each functionality in Postman, that way you have proper bookkeeping in place and will also be easily maintained.

API services are two types REST and SOAP. You need to gather information from the company that which services they are using and then accordingly you can concentrate on one service type. Since you have mention Postman , Its a REST client . You can use postman to test the Rest services manually.
I’m condunting class room as well as online training on API testing. If you are intrested in taking the course of duration 30 hrs which will cover both REST and SOAP services. Please respond me back.
Thanks,
Sibabrata
read lessTesting the API is similar to functional testing without UI so you boundary value cases will apppy here but in request body you need to supply char limit similarly data type tests, db constraint checks, imvalid and valid auth code the tests, invalid and valid headers tests and invalid and valid method type tests are some examples of API test cases.
