Well its a bit technical if you talk about the real difference. For 2D the animation is mostly manual like we can use a lightbox and pencil but 3D cant be done without a computer. 2D is frame by frame and 3D can be done pose to pose also. The most obvious difference between 2D and 3D is right in the name. The 2D means two dimensional and 3D means three dimensional. In other words, a 2D animation has flat images that lack depth and can only move vertically (y axis) or horizontally (x axis). In contrast, 3D animations add depth so squares...

In other words, a 2D animation has flat images that lack depth and can only move vertically (y axis) or horizontally (x axis). In contrast, 3D animations add depth so squares in 2D become cubes in 3D. The 3D animations also move in three directions, vertically (y axis), horizontally (x axis) and forward (closer to you) or backward (farther away from you), which is the z axis. read less

We can play with that of 2D object in to 3D depth by adding it the 3rd dimension or start transforming into 3D depth like in real world we do observe. And 'Animation' is the term used with moving object virtually. This is the basic but major difference between 2D and 3D animation.... start learning !!! read less
