When we have two semiconductor atoms near each other and have 4 electrons in the outermost shell, they make a valence bond. These outer electrons are called valence electrons. When we apply external energy or temperature to these atoms, they break their valence band and become free electrons, and these free electrons are responsible for current flowing. As we increase more energy, electrons become free, and there is the breaking process of a covalent bond.
