Topology is a branch of mathematics that studies how spaces are organized, structured, and connected. It's sometimes called "rubber sheet geometry" because it studies how objects can be continuously deformed without tearing or gluing. For example, topology can be used to understand how a sheet of paper can be sculpted without tearing off or gluing on pieces of it - sort of like origami.
Algebraic topology is a branch of topology that uses abstract algebra to study topological spaces.
Algebraic topology converts a topological problem into an algebraic problem that is hopefully easier to solve. For example, a group called a homology group can be associated to each space, and the torus and the Klein bottle can be distinguished from each other because they have different homology groups.
