For these students, I use a higher level of the Cambridge corpus: PET or Objective First. These materials are prepared with a high level of variety so the students do not get bored. I also prepare a list of eleven discussion topics for the students. Reading from a text is generally not a good use of time for these students unless their reading level is poor, in which case it is required (I would get them to read from New Age magazines) One can generally go further with the discussion topics for these older students as their understanding of the world is better. Discussion is a very important part of the class and I do not gloss over it

At the end of the KET book, students can do a KET exam of English proficiency in the British Council (details available on enquiry to me). (PET for more advanced students) I also test their reading with reading from English magazines (generally New Age articles, which they will find interesting). This is an interesting age for children, as they are well on the road to becoming adults. I quiz them with 11 discussion topics I prepare beforehand for each session, to improve their spoken English

I started teaching small groups in Mamallapuram 2 years ago. Classes I-V are my favourite age group. I try to emphasise the spoken language as they get plenty of written work in school. I use Cambridge Young Learners English and ask them to tell a story each to the group.(I do a story as well). We do Creative Writing on different topics each week. We also do a spelling game for the group, and read from a comic such as Beem (Good for dialogue). What I love about these younger children as they are so open to new ideas, and I feel a honoured to be able to introduce them to new ideas.
