The GRE syllabus for the general test is divided into 3 sections:
Verbal reasoning
Quantitative reasoning
Analytical writing
Verbal reasoning section assesses your ability to analyse and examine the written material available to you and obtain useful inferences from it. You have to understand the meaning of words, sentences and structure of the entire text. And analyse the relationship between words, phrases and concepts.
About half of this section consists of reading passages to which you need to answer questions. In the other half, you are required to read, interpret and complete the given sentences. In the new format, antonyms and analogies are replaced by written comprehensions, sentence equivalent and text completion.
Quantitative reasoning measures your problem-solving abilities on basic concepts like arithmetic, algebra, geometry and also data analysis. In this section you are required to comprehend quantitative information, interpret, analyse, and find solutions by applying basic mathematical concepts.
You will be provided with an on-screen calculator. In case of paper-based test, calculators will be provided to you at the test centre.
Analytical writing measures your critical thinking and analytical writing skills. You are required to provide focused responses for the given task. Writing ability is assessed based on your flow or style of writing, techniques that you use for paraphrasing or splitting the article, the tone of the writing, grammatical and verbal English skills and thinking and analyzing capabilities.
GRE syllabus for the subject test includes Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology.
GRE subject test assesses your knowledge in a specific field of study. It is a paper-based test that showcases your understanding and familiarity with the subjects and helps you stand out from others during admission into graduate programs of your choice. You need to have a strong educational background in your respective field of study to appear for the test.
