The tropical Thorn forests and Scrubs are the kind of forests or areas that experience an average rainfall of less than 70cm, which is too less or scanty. They are usually seen in the semi-arid regions of India like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and the dry areas of the Deccan Plateau.

The features of these kinds of forests are;

  • The vegetation consists of stunted trees with thorny bushes.
  •  The majority of the forests are covered with trees like Babul, Kikar, Khair, Plums, Cactus, and Dates.
  •  Due to a scarcity of rainfall, the leaves of these trees are tiny to aid in minimum evaporation.
  • The vegetation also consists of short thorny shrubs and bushes in between.
  • Due to the lack of nutrients from the soil, the roots are spread wide underground, so that they can move further in search of nutrients from the soil.
  • The sharp thorns also prevent the plants from animals and uprooting of the trees.
  • Animals like donkeys, camel, rattlesnake, porcupine, wild deer, Nilgai, and rabbit thrive in this habitat.
  • The trees in the forests remain leafless for the most part of the year. Hence, they're sometimes called thorn scrub or scrub jungles.
  • The humidity in this area is less than 50%, and the temperatures are between 25 to 30 degree C.
