1. One of the most important qualities a teacher can have is patience. Without patience, you are going to have a really hard time being an effective teacher. Children tend to like to test their teachersâ?? patience, so if you tend to lose your patience easily, and get angry quickly, then being an educator is not a job for you. Patience is a quality that will help you be successful in the classroom. If this is something that you need to work on, then try a few mindfulness techniques. When you feel your blood is about to boil, then take a moment to step back and take a few deep breaths. The more you do this, the easier it will be for you to settle yourself down in those difficult moments.

2. Creativity
Successful teachers are creative in many ways. They have the ability to think outside of the box, use the resources that they have to create amazing lessons and activities, and come up with creative ways to handle discipline in the classroom. While some people may feel that creativity is something that you are born with, others say that if you just take the time to think and use your imagination, you too can tap into your own creative side.

3. Communication and Collaboration
Having the skill set to be able to communicate and collaborate with others is an extremely important personal skill to have as an educator. Whether you are communicating with students, parents or colleagues, teachers need this skill in order to be successful at their job. Teachers need the ability to communicate important information, as well as understand different perspectives. In addition to that, educators also need to have the ability to collaborate with their coworkers. Teachers often work together as a team in order to better provide students with a high-quality education. The ability to work in tandem with others will only help your career in the education system.

4. Likeable Personality
Another personal skill all teachers should foster is an engaging and likeable personality. Even if you may be an introvert (which many teachers usually are NOT), you can still cultivate a likeable personality in the classroom. This doesnâ??t mean that you have to be a comedian and make your students laugh every chance that you get, it only means that a teacher who has the ability to engage their students and have a relationship with them will only make the class more interesting and fun to be in.

5. Self-Discipline
In order to discipline your students, you need to have self-discipline. Having self-discipline means that you have the willpower and the control to not be affected when your students are misbehaving. You are firm and fair with your discipline techniques, and have the ability to not let your students walk all over you. This is an essential personal trait that teachers need to have in order to be successful in their classroom.

These are just five of the essential, personal skills teachers should possess. Other traits, like being able to adapt, having self-awareness, and having a great love for your job, are also on the top of the list of skills teachers should foster. If you find that you donâ??t have these skills, then itâ??s not too late to cultivate them now. All you have to do is be mindful of what skills you need to retain and practice implementing them each and every day.
