Objective
This Course has been designed to enable students of economics, commerce, management and social sciences in general to acquire knowledge and develop skills in statistical techniques and financial analysis using MS Excel. It seeks to equip students with an understanding of basic statistical and financial concepts of practical use. Data analysis in decision making is made simple and easy in clear-cut steps. The course seeks to prepare the students to navigate through excel spread sheet to compute various statistical and financial measures.
Content
The Course is developed through three phases with each phase standing on its own as well as providing a foundation for the next. In the first phase MS-Excel is introduced with the student guided to learn entry and import of data, navigation of spread sheet, carrying out operations and developing presentations. The second phase introduces statistical measures of data summarisation and analysis illustrated in Excel spread sheets. The third phase introduces financial measures of common use, their general computation and working them out in Excel. At the end a few advanced tools of statistical analysis such as correlation and regression are introduced and illustrated in Excel.
Outcome
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe what a spread sheet is and what Excel’s capabilities are and can work with elements that make up the structure of a worksheet. They will be able to work with spread sheet and entering data in excel, using formulas and calculations, creating tables, charts and pivotal tables. They will be familiar with basic statistical and financial measures of general use. They will be able to do basic computations in statistics and finance using Excel. Students will acquire the capacity to create personal and/or business spread sheets following current professional and/or industry standards. Their potential for critical thinking to design and create spread sheets and communicate in a business setting using spread sheet vocabulary will be enhanced.
