Student centered! I adapted my teaching to meet the needs of individual students, and it worked 99% of the time. I mainly used to talk to them. You might call them pep talks, but they were more encouragement and telling them what steps they could take to do better. Every year, after the first quarter my numbers on tests were something like this A’s 50%, B’s 30%, C’s 15%, D’s 4%, and F’s 1%. I had competitions between classes. The class with the most A’s plus every student in the other classes with an A would win a prize. I was not wealthy (I was a teacher) so I had to give prizes that were no cost to me yet appealing to the students. Their favorite prize was when I would type up all of the notes for the next unit and copy them for them. Then they didn’t have to take notes. Other prizes might be: no homework for the next unit, an automatic A on the next quiz, and other things like that.
