Importing Files ro Revit

As outlined in the previous chapters 1.01, 1.02 and 1.03, we can do Schematic design in Revit by using Mass modeling features. When we already have Schematic design worked in other software/ file formats, we can import the work into Revit and develop it further.

  • Revit supports CAD formats such as .dwg, .dxf, .skp.
  • While using Sketchup files, it is recommended to import the model in either mass family or an in-place family, otherwise the model doesn't act as a mass. This limits the reusability of the model and we cannot take advantage of the 'Select by face' feature in Revit and the model will be merely useful for reference purpose.
  • .dwg format can be imported in any view (Plans, Elevations and 3d) depending on our requirement.
  • While importing we will get a set of options in a Import/Link dialog box, select the options as required. It is recommended to select the option “Link (instead of import)” always, as it reduces the file size and can unload and reload the drawings when ever necessary using “Manage Links...” under file menu. For the exact placement of co-ordinates as in AutoCAD select the option “origin to origin” under positioning.
  • Revit also supports the markup files like dwf file types. Dwf format must be imported in the sheet views. The imported view name in the 2D dwf should be same as the view name in the Revit file. If the view name in the revit file differs with the dwf view name then select the respective link from the drop down list under “Revit view” in the “Link Markup Page to Revit Sheets” dialog box which appears after importing.

When we don't have AutoCAD drawings and we only have an image then we can import it for reference.

  • Revit supports image formats like .jpeg, .jpg, .bmp, .png file types.
  • These file types can be imported only in plans and elevations.
  • Revit also supports .ifc file exchange. This file type acts as a bridge for interoperability among BIM softwares.

To learn basics about this feature, please refer to Help – Interoperability – Import/Link.
