When an atom/molecule gain or loss one or more than one electrons then the species (atom/molecule) carries charge then this species is referred to as ion. When a species loss electron then acquired positive charge on it and called as Cation or electropositive species, e.g. H+ ion and NH4+ ion. (Mostly first and second Group elements tend to form cations).
On the other hand, the species that gain one or more electrons acquire a negative charge and are called as Anion or electronegative species, e.g. Cl- ion and O2- ion.(Mostly halogens have a strong tendency to form anions).
