As a tuition teacher in biology, one experience that stands out vividly is when I was helping a student who had consistently struggled with understanding genetics. They found Punnett squares and inheritance patterns particularly confusing. Despite multiple explanations, they just couldn’t seem to grasp the concept. One evening, during a one-on-one session, I decided to try a different approach. Instead of relying on textbooks and notes, I used everyday examples. I related the concept of dominant and recessive genes to traits we observe in families—eye color, hair type, and even height. To make it more relatable, I asked them to imagine they were planning a family and wanted to predict the traits their children might inherit. Gradually, I saw the gears turning in their mind. Their confusion turned into curiosity, and they began asking insightful questions. We worked through the Punnett squares again, this time with a fresh perspective. By the end of the session, their understanding had deepened significantly, and they could solve the problems that had once seemed impossible. A week later, the student excitedly told me they had aced their test on genetics. That moment of witnessing their growth and confidence was incredibly rewarding. It reminded me why I loved teaching—because of the impact I could have on my students, helping them unlock their potential and realize that biology was not just a subject to memorize but a fascinating world waiting to be explored.
