Our atmosphere consists of approx 78% of nitrogen, but it is present in Dinitrogen form which non-reactive and hence useless to most organism. Nitrogen fixation is the process of converting this atmospheric nitrogen into NH3, i.e. Ammonia or other nitrogenous compounds in the soil so that it can be utilised by plants and other microorganisms for their needs.
