My experience during my BA English Honours was nothing short of transformative. I still remember the first day of class when I was introduced to the vast world of English literature, stretching from the Anglo-Saxon period all the way to the Modern Age. It was a thrilling journey through time, as I explored the evolution of language, thought, and society through the works of some of the most iconic writers. From the epic tales of Beowulf and the lyricism of Shakespeare’s plays to the modernist masterpieces of T.S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf, every era had its unique charm and challenges. Studying drama, novels, poetry, short stories, and essays allowed me to appreciate the subtle nuances in each form. I loved how drama captured the complexities of human emotion and interaction, while novels and short stories gave me a glimpse into the individual psyche. Poetry, of course, was my personal favorite—its ability to evoke feelings with just a few words was always something I marveled at. In addition to literature, I delved into Phonetics, Rhetorics, and Prosody, subjects that deepened my understanding of language. Phonetics opened my eyes to the mechanics of speech, teaching me how sounds are produced and their impact on meaning. Rhetorics helped me grasp the art of persuasion and argument, a skill I still find incredibly valuable. Prosody, with its focus on the rhythm and melody of language, added another layer of appreciation for the musicality in both poetry and prose. Looking back, I realize that it wasn't just about reading books and writing essays; it was about developing critical thinking and a deeper connection with the power of language. I emerged from my college years not only as a more knowledgeable individual but also as someone with a newfound appreciation for the written word, a skill that has shaped the way I see and understand the world today.
