When you want to show that you are paying attention, do the following things -

1. Look into the eyes of the person speaking to you - don't stare - but maintain a comfortable eye contact.  It builds trust.

2. Give verbal cues - like, "Yes", "I understand" to show you are paying attention

3. Ask questions to show you are following the line of the discussion
