A medical-surgical nurse provides care to surgical patients or other patients who have multiple conditions. They perform a variety of tasks related to patient safety and patient care. A med-surg nurse strives to promote overall health, prevent disease and provide support to patients and their families to help them cope with illnesses and medical conditions.

While the exact responsibilities of a med-surg nurse can vary, these nurses typically do the following tasks:

• Administer medications

• Assess a patient's condition

• Assist with patient education and care planning

• Check a patient's vital signs

• Collaborate with patient care team members about plans and progress

• Complete admission and discharge paperwork

• Meet with patients' families to provide support and education

• Operate various equipment, such as catheters, feeding tubes, IVs and oxygen tanks

• Provide wound care

• Perform blood tests on patients

• Update records with patient care, needs and progress
