This course will introduce students to the Indian classical dance form, Bharatanatyam. Students will learn the basic concepts, principles, and techniques of Bharatanatyam dance through a combination of theoretical and practical instruction. The course will cover the history and evolution of Bharatanatyam, its unique features, and its significance in Indian culture. Students will also learn basic adavus (steps), hand gestures, facial expressions, and abhinaya (emotions), and will apply these skills in small choreographed sequences.
Course Objectives: By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the history and evolution of Bharatanatyam dance
- Identify and demonstrate basic adavus (steps), hand gestures, facial expressions, and abhinaya (emotions) used in Bharatanatyam dance
- Perform small choreographed sequences of Bharatanatyam dance
