This course is for everyone who wants to study cinema or wants to make a career in it. I would start the course with the history of cinema right after the invention of the movie camera. How cinema came into the picture after Lumiere Brothers took the first shot of a train coming to the platform from a movie camera. Later on, I would discuss the various film movements like Russian montage, Noir, Italian neo-realism, French new wave Hollywood new wave etc with their socio-political contexts and how they helped cinema grow both narratively and aesthetically. I would talk about the works of master filmmakers like Fritz Lang, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Bergman, Stanley Kubrick, Kurosawa, Andrei Tarkovsky etc. After that, I will switch on to Indian cinema of various languages. India as a society is very different from West and this fact us quite visible on its cinema too. I would teach about the works of auteurs like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mani Kaul, Adoor Gopalkrishnam as well as main stream filmmakers like Manmohan Desai, Yash Chopra, etc. Apart from the direction I will also talk about the various other aspects of filmmaking like Cinematography, Sound design, Production design and editing.
