Isomerism is a fundamental concept in organic chemistry. It refers to the phenomenon where two or more compounds have the same molecular formula but different structural arrangements or spatial orientations, resulting in distinct chemical and physical properties. There are two primary types of isomerism:
1. Structural Isomerism (also called constitutional isomerism): In this type, isomers have different connectivity or arrangements of atoms. This includes chain isomerism (different carbon chain arrangements), functional group isomerism (different functional groups), and tautomeric isomerism (rapid proton shifts).
2. Stereoisomerism: These isomers have the same connectivity of atoms but differ in spatial arrangement. Stereoisomers can be further divided into two subtypes:
- Geometric (cis-trans) isomerism: Occurs when there is restricted rotation around a double bond, resulting in different spatial arrangements (cis - same side, trans - opposite sides).
- Optical isomerism (enantiomerism): Arises due to chiral molecules that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other.
