Not at all. These days all age people, females as well males are knitting & crocheting... These ate classic crafts which never get old. You can easily gift your knitted/crocheted items to a loved one, or as gifts to anyone for that matter.... Also once you learn them, they give you a meditative experience, which is amazing in itself

Hook size depends on the yarn thickness & the pattern needed. If you use a hook slightly big, you might end up saving some yarn but the pattern beauty largely depends on the appropriate hook size... Also if the hook is too big, the holes between stitches are quite big & your project neither looks good, nor holds shape. So appropriate hook size is very important.
