String eats up the heap memory especially when there are modifications made and hence suggested not to be used in such scenarios.

finally is introduced to perform the cleanup operations such as closing the open DB connection clearing up the resources etc.

init() method is more robust and broader in scope than the default constructor. init() is part of the servlet life cycle and required to be invoked once before taking any requests and its invoked by the container and it has access to ServletConfig as well. In contrast, default constructor can not take... ...more
init() method is more robust and broader in scope than the default constructor. init() is part of the servlet life cycle and required to be invoked once before taking any requests and its invoked by the container and it has access to ServletConfig as well. In contrast, default constructor can not take such parameters while initializing and its invoked everytime the instantiation happens. Hope it clears the difference.

init() method is more powerful and broader in scope as compared to the default constructor, init() is part of the servlet life cycle which is invoked by the container before servlet can start receiving any requests and it can populate servletconfig objects providing you have configured it through web.xml whereas default constructor is is invoked within the web container to initialize the objects and it can't take any arguments such as ServletConfig. Moreover constructor is called for every instance of the class. Init is called only when first time servlet is called
