What are wavelength, frequency, time period and amplitude of a sound wave?
Wavelength: The distance between two consecutive compressions or rarefractions is known as wavelength. It's SI unit is meter (m)
Frequency: The number of complete oscillations per second is known as the frequency of sound wave. It is measured in Hertz (Hz)
Amplitude: The maximum height reached by the crust or the trough of a sound wave is called it's amplitude.
How are the wavelength and frequency of a sound wave related to its speed?
Speed, wavelength, and frequency of a sound wave are related by the following equation:
Speed () = Wavelength () × Frequency ()
Calculate the wavelength of a sound wave whose frequency is 220 Hz and speed is 440 m/s in a given medium.
Frequency of the sound wave, = 220 Hz
Speed of the sound wave, v = 440 m s−1
For a sound wave,
Speed = Wavelength × Frequency
Hence, the wavelength of the sound wave is 2 m.
A person is listening to a tone of 500 Hz sitting at a distance of 450 m from the source of the sound. What is the time interval between successive compressions from the source?
The time interval between two successive compressions is equal to the time period of the wave. This time period is reciprocal of the frequency of the wave and is given by the relation:
What are wavelength, frequency, time period and amplitude of a sound wave?
Wavelength=the distance between two crests and troughs of a wave.
frequency=the no. of sound waves produced in 1 second.
Time period=time period is taken to produce one wave of sound.
Amplitude =maximum displacement along with the mean position of particles of the medium.
How are the wavelength and frequency of a sound wave related to its speed?
Wavelength and frequency have a direct relationship.
The shorter the wavelength, the higher the frequency.
The speed of a sound wave is related to the density, elasticity and temperature of the medium it's travelling through.
velocity = frequency * wavelength
v=νλ
Calculate the wavelength of a sound wave whose frequency is 220 Hz and speed is 440 m/s in a given medium.
Formula -
Velocity = Wavelength × Frequency
Using the above mentioned formula,
__________
v = λ × n
__________
where λ denotes Wavelength and n denotes frequency
Given,
v = 440 m/sec
n = 220 Hz
λ = ???
v = λ × n
440 = λ × 220
=> λ = 440 / 220
=> λ = 2
WAVELENGTH (λ) = 2 m
ANSWER = 2 m
