In this chapter, you’ll study the motion and related terms. What is motion? Motion is the act of moving, or the change in location, or the position of an object over a period of time. In our day to day lives, we see many objects as well as organisms in motion including us. The leaves swaying in the air, birds flying in the sky, fish swimming in the water, children playing in the garden- all are examples of objects in motion. Even heavenly bodies like planets, stars and satellites all are in motion. Motion can be slow or fast, but everything in this universe moves to some extent. Motion can be of various types, some objects or organisms may move in a straight line, some in a curved path, some may rotate or revolve; some may just shake in one place itself. It is important to have in-depth knowledge about motion and mechanics to have a clear understanding of physics, and related terms such as force, velocity, speed and more.
8.1 Describing Motion
8.1.1 Motion along a straight line
8.1.2 Uniform motion and non-uniform motion
8.2 Measuring the Rate of Motion
8.2.1 Speed with direction
8.3 Rate of Change of Velocity
8.4 Graphical Representation of Motion
8.4.1 Distance–time graphs
8.4.2 Velocity-time graphs
8.5 Equations of Motion by Graphical Method
8.5.1 Equation for velocity-time relation
8.5.2 Equation for position-time relation
8.5.3 Equation for position-velocity relation
8.6 Uniform Circular Motion
Section 8.1 – In this section, you’ll learn what motion is all about, and different types of motion (along with examples) such as motion along a straight line, uniform and non-uniform motion.
Section 8.2 – In this section, you will acquire knowledge of how to measure the rate of motion. It is important because not all objects move at the same pace. You’ll learn how to find the average speed of an object with some examples.
Section 8.3 – In this section, you’ll study the rate of change of velocity. You’ll study what is acceleration, what is uniform and non-uniform acceleration.
Section 8.4 – In this section, you’ll learn how to depict motion graphically. Graphically shown information is easy to understand. You’ll come across various graphical methods of presenting data such as vertical graph bars, a straight-line graph, and line graph. Such graphs help to represent distance, velocity, quantities and time in a convenient manner.
Section 8.5 – In this section, you’ll study how to show equations of motions graphically. You’ll learn various equations such as equation for velocity-time relation, the equation for position-time relation and equation for the position–velocity relation and solve several examples related to these.
Section 8.6 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge about what is uniform circular motion and some day to day examples related to such motion.
In this chapter, you are provided with several diagrams, activities and examples with their solutions for a clear understanding of Motion.
