In previous chapters, you studied what is motion and force and how they are
related to each other. In this chapter, you will study about ‘gravitation’ discovered
by Issac Newton, an English physicist and mathematician. You will also learn about
the effect of gravitation on all the physical bodies present in the universe.
In NCERT Solutions for Class 9, Science, Chapter 10, you’ll study about
gravitation, the universal law of gravitation, its importance and applications and
many related terms like mass, inertia, buoyancy, thrust, pressure and more.
Thus, a thorough study of this chapter will give you a clear understanding of what
is gravitation and help you answer several questions related to it.
10.1 Gravitation
10.1.1 Universal Law of Gravitation
10.1.2 Importance of the Universal Law of Gravitation
10.2 Free Fall
10.2.1 To Calculate the Value of g
10.2.2 Motion of objects under the influence of the gravitational force of the
earth
10.3 Mass
10.4 Weight
10.4.1 Weight of an Object on the Moon
10.5 Thrust and Pressure
10.5.1 Pressure in Fluids
10.5.2 Buoyancy
10.5.3 Why objects float or sink when placed on the surface of the water?
10.6 Archimedes’ Principle
10.7 Relative Density
Section 10.1 – In this section, you’ll study what gravitation is all about, what made
Newton discover gravitation, what is the universal law of gravitation and its
importance along with some solved examples.
Section 10.2 – In this section, you’ll learn about the velocity of falling objects. You
will also acquire knowledge on how to calculate the magnitude of the gravitational
force and the value of acceleration due to gravity of the earth along with some
examples.
Section 10.3 – In this section, you’ll study what is mass and inertia and the relation between the two.
Section 10.4 – In this section, you’ll learn how to calculate the weight of an object
on earth, the weight of an object on the moon and the reason why the weight of an object on the moon is one-sixth of its weight on the earth.
Section 10.5 – In this section, you’ll study what is thrust and pressure all about
and the relation between the two along with some examples. You’ll also come
across related terms like pressure in fluids, buoyancy, the density of a substance
and more.
Section 10.6 – In this section, you’ll learn about Archimedes’ principle in detail.
You’ll study who Archimedes was, what were his discoveries and applications of
Archimedes’ principle in our lives.
Section 10.7 – In this section, you’ll learn how to express the density of a substance in comparison with that of water.
In this chapter, you are provided with several diagrams, activities and examples
with their solutions for a clear understanding of Gravitation. To know more about
