Isn’t it interesting to know that our earth is filled with living organisms, which are extremely diverse in nature? Ranging from microscopic bacteria to the giant blue whale, this diversity is a phenomenon! It’s not only about the size of the organism, but also other characteristics such as life span or how they look, behaviour, habitat and more features that help us categorise these organisms. In this chapter, you’ll learn about the classification of plants and animals on a different basis. You’ll also study about evolution, biodiversity and nomenclature of these living organisms. Over the years, scientists have classified all these organisms into categories and sub-categories for better understanding.
In-Depth knowledge of NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science, Chapter 7 will give you a clear idea of how such diverse organisms are classified for a meaningful study and further research.

7.6 Nomenclature
Section 7.1 – In this section, you’ll learn how to classify living organisms and what characteristics are taken into consideration for such categorisation.
Section 7.2 – In this section, you’ll study the classification and evolution of living organisms on the basis of their body design and function. You’ll also learn what you mean by evolution and biodiversity.
Section 7.3 – In this section, you’ll come across the hierarchy of classification of living organisms known as kingdoms as proposed by Whittaker. The five kingdoms are Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. You’ll also study about their important characteristics. Further, you’ll learn about sub-categorization into groups such as Kingdom, Phylum (for animals) / Division (for plants), Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
Section 7.4 – In this section, you’ll learn about the classification of plants based on the fact whether the plant body possesses parts or not. Further, you’ll learn about classification based on the special tissues for carrying water and other useful substances and the ability of plants to bear seeds or not.
Section 7.5 – In this section, you’ll learn about classification among animals based on the fact whether the animals are eukaryotic, multicellular or heterotrophic. Another method of classification is on the basis of the design of the animal body.
Section 7.6 – In this section, you’ll learn what nomenclature is and why there is a need for systematic naming of living organisms as proposed by Carolus Linnaeus in the eighteenth century. You’ll also come across some important conventions followed while writing the scientific names.
In this chapter, you are provided with several diagrams, activities and examples with their solutions for a clear understanding of Diversity in Living Organisms.
