Written by the famous Indian author, Mulk Raj Anand, “The Lost Child” is the story of a child who gets lost in a fair. In this story, the narrator highlights the bond of love and affection that the child shares with his parents. At the same time, he describes the child’s state of mind when he finds that his parents are missing.
Synopsis
The story took place in the season of spring. The villagers came out of their houses, wearing bright, colourful dresses and walked towards the fair. A child went there along with his parents – excited and happy. He was attracted to the variety of things available in the fair store, especially towards the sweets and toy stalls. The father was getting angry because of the child’s curiosity, but it was his mother who pacified him and diverted his attention to other things. The child moved forward and then again backward as something happened to catch the attention of his curious eye – every now and then.
As the family moved forward, the child wanted various things available on the fair stalls. His mouth started watering at the sight of golden and silver coloured leaves. He wanted to have his favourite sweet-burfi but walked ahead- knowing that his parents would refuse his request on the grounds of him being greedy. He wanted one of the beautiful Gulmohar garlands but didn’t ask his parents for it. He also didn’t ask for balloons knowing the fact that his parents would deny as he was old to play with balloons.
The child stopped at the sight of the snake-charmer and the roundabout swing. As he turned around to ask permission to ride the swing, he noticed, much to his horror – that his parents were nowhere to be found. Neither his mother nor his father was there. The child got terrified losing sight of his parents and started crying after running around realising that it was difficult to find his parents at the overcrowded place. A kind-hearted man took notice of the bitterly weeping boy and lifted him up. He wanted to stop the kid from crying and offered him a joyride – which the kid denied. Determined – he offered the kid all the things he wanted previously be it garland, sweets, toys but all he wanted was his father and mother.
