Summary:
The story “The Adventure of Toto” is written by Ruskin Bond. It is an amusing story revolves around the protagonist of the story, named Toto, a monkey. The narrator’s Grandfather had gifted Toto to the narrator. He had bought it from a tonga driver for five rupees. Toto is a very naughty monkey who loves adventures. When the narrator’s Grandfather found Toto, he was tied to a feeding trough so that he could not run away. The Grandfather bought Toto so that he could add it to his zoo.
As the story proceeds, the narrator describes the appearance of the monkey. It had bright eyes and teeth that were as white as pearls. The Anglo-Indian ladies got scared when Toto used to flash his teeth. He also had a long tail which added to his good looks. The narrator’s grandmother did not like it when he’s Grandfather got new pets – birds or animals. So, the Grandfather decided not to tell his wife until she was in a good mood. To hide Toto, the writer and the Grandfather took him to a cupboard in the narrator’s room and tied him inside so that he would not escape. However, Toto had escaped, tearing the narrator’s blazer to thin pieces as well as destroying the wallpaper in his room. They were shocked yet amused. They shifted him to a big cage along with other pets such as a tortoise, a squirrel and rabbits and a pet goat. He was a mischievous monkey as he would not let the other animals sleep at night.
The next day, Grandfather had to go for a trip, and he decided to take Toto along as he was very notorious. When the Grandfather returned, he narrated the happening to the narrator as he could not go along with him to the trip. He said he had put Toto in a canvas bag with a zipper along with some grass in the bottom so that he would not escape. Toto had made several attempts to escape which is why everyone was curious as to what he was carrying in the bag.
Eventually, Grandmother came to know about Toto and now they could keep him in the stable along with his goat, Nana. Toto was in for a treat as he would get a warm bath in the cold winters. However, Toto was not meant to be kept indoors in a confined place as he was uncontrollable. He would eat off the same plate as them, and when Grandmother corrected him, he threw the plate on her face. He would also throw glasses of water on the aunts when they tried to catch him. So, they finally decided he was not meant to be kept at home. Thus, the Grandfather sold Toto back to the Tonga driver for a sum of three rupees.
