Literature Chapter 3 - The Little Girl

This Class 9 Beehive Chapter 3 named “The Little Girl” is based on the deep bond that exists between a parent and their children. A child when they are young feels that their parents don’t love them as much as they’re too strict. They often fail to understand that this strictness is a way that parents show out of concern for their children. A child upon reaching adulthood can realise how much their parents love and care for them.

Summary

The prose “The Little Girl” by Katherine Mansfield is a story based on a girl named Kezia who was never able to understand her father truly. The sight of her father used to scare her as she felt he was as big as a giant and always became nervous around him. One time when she was forced to remain inside her house to avoid the cold from affecting her health, Kezia’s grandmother suggested her to prepare a gift for her father’s birthday. Kezia decided to gift him a pin cushion as she was good at making them; however, while working on it, she made a mistake. So, to make up for it, she decided to fill the pincushion with paper which unfortunately had her father’s speech written on it. This caused Kezia to be punished by her father, leading her to be scared of him even more than she already was.

Her fear of her father often led to admire her neighbours as they had a wonderful time playing in their lawn. The Macdonalds always looked like they were spending a fun and enjoyable family time. Mr Macdonald seemed like the most loving and caring father in the world. This misunderstanding caused her to think that maybe things would have been different if she had a different father who was much more loving and caring.

One time when Kezia’s mother had fallen ill and happened to be hospitalised, she was woken up in the middle of the night due to a nightmare. She woke up in the middle of the night, screaming to find her father by her bed. Upon seeing her, he picked little Kezia up and carried her to her room. He then tucked her in and slowly fell asleep beside her. For the first time, Kezia was soothed by his presence by her side. The sound of her father’s beating heart was able to help fall asleep and realise that her father isn’t a scary person but is a man who loves and cares for his daughter.
