This poem belongs to a musical genre where the poet describes his longingness for a peaceful and serene life at Innisfree. The poet had spent most of his childhood at the aforementioned place and wished to return to his sweet homeland. Throughout the poem, the poet talks about the natural scenic beauty of the place and how he wishes to live a life of tranquillity here. Even though his current surroundings are bleak and boring, however, his imagination of how life would be if he returns to his motherland, inspires him to go on and finally decide to return.
Summary:
The poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” by William Butler Yeats is the story of a protagonist who wishes to return to his childhood land, Innisfree. In this poem, the speaker starts the poem by saying that he wishes to build a cabin here, accompanied by a small garden and a honeybee hive. The poet wants to spend the rest of his life in absolute peace and tranquillity, away from all the hustle and bustle. He wishes to live the slow country life, in the lap of mother nature.
In the second stanza, the poet explains how peaceful life would be if he starts living in Innisfree. He talks about how when he would wake-up in the morning, everything would seem foggy and then slowly as the sun would rise, the entire area around him would be covered in a golden veil of light. This scene itself will be able to fill his mind with a sense of calmness. He also further elaborates about how the song of the male cricket will be able to make him feel serene. He further goes on to talk about the sparkling stars that will light up the night sky, how as the sun sets in the evening the sky would immediately become a shade of lilac, how the linnet birds flying across the sky would all be able to bring a sense of warmth and calmness within him.
By the time the poet reaches the third stanza, it is evident how much he wishes to go back to Innisfree and spend the rest of his life there. He talks about how every passing minute he gets reminded of the sweet memories of his homeland and wishes to go back there. As the poet sits beside a lake, the sound of the water splashing against the shore reminds him of his sweet home. Whether he is standing by the doorway or on a discoloured grey pavement, the sweet sounds and fresh memories of his motherland beckons him to return to The Lake Isle of Innisfree.
